A five-bedroom house and an artist’s studio in Bala Cynwyd for $1,150,000

Artist Stuart Yankell and his wife, MaryEllen Velahos, had long considered moving from Bala Cynwyd in the New York area to be near their children and grandchildren.

But the temptation became irresistible when the couple were lucky enough to buy the home and studio in Stamford, Connecticut, built by Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor of Mount Rushmore, and formerly occupied by cartoonist Mort Walkercreator of Bailey Beetle.

Yankell and Velahos, an artist-turned-acupuncturist, will leave behind a five-bedroom, 3½-bathroom home built nearly a century ago and an adjacent 19th-century studio of undetermined pedigree, though Yankell says he’s Probably was a barn serving what was then a farming community.

The couple, originally from South Jersey, met at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts when they were both pursuing dual degrees with the University of Pennsylvania.

They bought the house in 1991, designed by the Lower Merion School District as a place to raise their two daughters, and fell in love with the neighborhood.

Over the years, “we haven’t left an inch of the house untouched,” Yankell says. The rare double lot — for the neighborhood — allowed us to sculpt the property with gardens. It has a stately elegance…there is a kind of flow to the rooms.

The covered porch has wrapped stone walls and the kitchen has granite counter tops, a butcher block island with a bar sink and dual fuel stove. There are many large picture windows throughout the house.

The master suite includes a sitting area, fitted wardrobes, shelves and cupboards, as well as a honey onyx marble bathroom, glass shower and heated floor.

The second floor veranda has recently been converted into a laundry room.

There is a saltwater swimming pool with space to change. The studio has central heating and air conditioning and could easily be used as a master suite or home office.

There is an easy walk to the SEPTA regional rail station, library, playgrounds and restaurants.

The 3098 square foot house is listed by Israela Haor-Friedman of BHHS Fox & Roach Haverford for $1,150,000.
