Rabi’ Artist Studio / Studio Soundtrack
- Area :
Text description provided by the architects. This project consists in creating an extension of an artist’s studio for a famous Moroccan painter, Mr. Abdelkebbir Rabi’. The project takes place in the old colonial center of Casablanca, near the largest public park in the city and the splendid church of the “sacred heart”. Mr. Rabi’ used to work with bi-chromatic drawing or painting, he oscillates between figurative and abstract representation. As all of his work revolves around light and shadow, his only request was for natural light, and natural materials with a neutral atmosphere that he won’t mind at work.
So the space was an old technical terrace that was not used for much, and the idea was to cover part of it with a curved glass ceiling that would contain everything he needs to work, the proposal was to have a space bathed in diffuse light with all the comforts of a painter. The realization of the project was not easy because of the accessibility of the site. The space contains a workspace, a large worktop with all the painting equipment, an office space with its library, a living room, a storage room, and a bathroom.
The entire canopy was made of powder-coated metal in a workshop and was assembled on site. All the hot-tempered glass of the canopy is sandblasted to diffuse the light and make the cast shadows disappear, which is very important for a painter’s studio. All the parquet was made of oak, and the worktop was made of local travertine. The large base (25 cm) was also made of travertine. The desk and the bookcase are placed on rollers on rails, and it slides like a hidden door leading into the storage room.
